What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome(CFIDS), also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome(CFS). Myalgic Encephalomyelitis(ME), is a non-degenerative, unexplained, chronic or recurrent debilitating fatigue. They combined with other symptoms such as self-reported damages in meditation and short-term memory, sleep disturbances, and musculoskeletal pain.

Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome is a complex illness. This is not only because we still don’t know the exact causes of it and its symptomatology is a multidimensional phenomenon overlapping with other unexplained fatiguing syndromes. but also because there are no specific diagnostic tests available to detect it, and no definitive treatments exist for the chronic fatigue syndrome. Diagnosis of the chronic fatigue syndrome can be made only after different medical and psychiatric reasons of chronic fatiguing illness have been left out.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Case Definition

In 1994, an international panel of CFS research experts drafted a definition of a chronic fatigue syndrome that would be useful both to researchers studying the illness and to clinicians diagnosing it. A patient must satisfy the following two criteria in order to receive a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome:

  1. Have simple chronic fatigue of six months or longer period with other known medical situations excluded by clinical diagnosis.
  2. There are four or more of the following symptoms:
  • Substantial impairment in short-term memory or concentration;
  • A sore throat;
  • Tender lymph nodes;
  • Muscle pain;
  • Multi-joint pain without swelling or redness;
  • Headaches of a new type, pattern or severity;
  • Unrefreshing sleep;
  • Post-exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours

Other symptoms include muscle and joint pains, headaches, tender lymph nodes, sore throat, as well as post-exertional malaise which is a period of profound fatigue that follows mental or physical activities and requires twenty-four hours (or longer) to recover.
