1. Check with your doctor

For those who have had ear surgeries, punctured or ruptured eardrum, injury-related eardrum perforations, or previous ear infections, it is best that you check up with your doctor before you go swimming.

This will prevent any a future earache and will actually save you from getting ear medications and doctor visits. Do not, however, use over-the-counter eardrops unless prescribed by your doctor or specialist.

2. For mild swimmer’s ear

If it’s a mild case of swimmer’s ear, you can improve your condition by keeping your ears dry and applying a few drops of antiseptic eardrops. However, if you are getting a persistent pain in your ears you should see a physician right away.

3. Avoid swimming in dirty water

Avoid swimming or diving into pools or bodies of water like ocean, lakes or ponds wherein the water may not be clean. If you are not sure if the water is clean, don’t swim. More dirt means a higher risk of bacteria may entering your ears.

4. Shake the water out

6. Try a homemade antiseptic mixture

You can also apply a few drops of an antiseptic mixture of your own. Combine equal parts of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar as your homemade antiseptic eardrops. Applying a few drops in your ear after swimming can help prevent Swimmer’s Ear. However, this is advisable only if you have no previous ear surgeries, ear infection or eardrum perforations.

Alcohol absorbs water and white vinegar kills the bacteria which may build up inside your ear.

7. Wear a swim cap

Wearing tight-fitting swim cap covering your ears will also help you in preventing water getting inside your ears.

8. Don’t poke your ears

Putting hard objects smaller than your elbow can worsen ear infection. You can aggravate the swimmer’s ear by scratching, swabbing or poking the outer canal of your ears.
